Gutter Punk Coffee’s first microlot! We are really excited to have this coffee from Juan Carlos Navarro Ceciliano who owns Finca el Jocote in the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica. He grows the Caturra variety of coffee in clay soil on a 4-hectare farm with his family. One of the things that draws us to this coffee is Juan and his brother Eduardo’s dedication to community by clearly defining in their mission statement; “We know that together we are capable of achieving the impossible.” If you hang around GPC long enough you’re bound to hear someone say, “We all do better when we all do better” we think that goes for unstably housed people in Minneapolis and farmers in Costa Rica the same. We want to support farmers with our buying decisions, investing not only in incredible coffee but coffee that does incredible things.

One of the really interesting things about microlots, especially if they’re a specific variety of coffee, is the nuance in flavor that would otherwise be more muted in a coffee from many different farms. When you find a coffee this fantastic, you don’t want it to be lost in the mix. Look for notes of lemongrass, cocoa, lemon, kiwi and white sugar with a balanced citric, almost grapefruit-like acidity and a smooth mouthfeel. Expect a sharp, nuanced coffee with a light/medium body that will show you an exceptional example of how incredible a Costa Rica can be.
